FAQ about the Sporting Life 10K

Why was the date of the Sporting Life 10K changed?

In 2011, an agreement was reached with the City of Toronto to separate the two fall Toronto marathons. This agreement ensured that the Canada Running Series (CRS) Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon would remain in October with no competition and the Good Life Marathon would be moved to the spring on the first Sunday in May. Unfortunately, the agreement was made by CRS without the knowledge or agreement of either Sporting Life or Camp Oochigeas and without regard as to how this would impact fundraising for the charity. The Sporting Life 10K run has been held on the first Sunday in May for the past 14 years, and 2012 will be the first year with a new date. Instead of being alone in early May the result is 3 races all vying for runners

How will this year’s race differ?

This year, for the first time, 100% of race net proceeds will benefit Camp Oochigeas. In the past, only $1 from each race registration and funds raised through the event’s baggage check benefited our charitable partner. That means that last year only $18,467 of the over $1.3 million raised came from the event organizers or your entry fees – the rest was from the personal fundraising campaigns of 1,700 individuals and corporations. The course is the same, the charity is the same, and we have enlisted the help of Jay Glassman, GoodLife Fitness Toronto Marathon Race Director, to organize this year’s event.

As runners, we understand that many of you will have to choose one date or the other. Sporting Life together with Camp Ooch, remains committed to providing a world class run. Again remember this year we are thrilled to ensure that all of the net race proceeds will go to Camp Oochigeas.

We hope you will join us on May 13th for the annual Sporting Life 10K.
